Banadir Administration Unveils Strategic Plan to Eliminate Water Stagnation Points and Rehabilitate Critical Road Infrastructure

MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Banadir Regional Administration (BRA) has announced a comprehensive urban engineering initiative aimed at permanently resolving the issue of chronic water stagnation across the capital’s road network. The announcement was made by the Governor of Banadir and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab), following a strategic inspection tour of several arterial roads that have been severely impacted by poor drainage.

Mayor Mungab articulated that the administration is finalizing the logistical framework for a major reconstruction project designed not only to repave damaged roadways but to integrate modern hydraulic management systems. This dual approach aims to address the root cause of infrastructure deterioration in Mogadishu, where seasonal rains often lead to water accumulation that erodes asphalt and disrupts traffic flow. The Mayor confirmed that the project would commence imminently, focusing on the rehabilitation of dilapidated streets while simultaneously installing drainage mechanisms to manage runoff water.

The inspection tour included a site visit to the Fagax Junction, a critical intersection that has long suffered from waterlogging issues. Mayor Mungab designated this location as a priority zone, confirming that it will be one of the first sites to undergo the new reconstruction and maintenance protocols. The initiative represents a shift towards long-term urban planning, ensuring that road investments are protected from environmental wear.

In addition to the upcoming drainage projects, the Governor reviewed the progress of active construction sites, specifically visiting Jamhuuriya Road in the Kaaraan district. This corridor is currently undergoing a complete transformation with the laying of a new asphalt surface. The visit served to monitor the quality of the ongoing work and ensure it meets the administration’s standards for urban mobility.

During his address to the public, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein emphasized that the sustainability of these infrastructure projects relies heavily on civic engagement. He issued a direct appeal to the business community and local residents to actively participate in the preservation of the newly constructed roads. The Mayor stressed that public infrastructure is a collective asset, and its longevity depends on a shared commitment between the government and the citizenry to prevent misuse and maintain cleanliness.
