Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – African Union Commission Chairperson H.E. Mohamud Ali Yuosuf and German Parliamentary State Secretary Niels Annen today pledged to strengthen institutional ties during high-level talks at the AU headquarters. The discussions highlighted Germany’s pivotal role as both a multilateral partner to the AU and a bilateral supporter of African nations, particularly in health and economic development.
Chairperson Mahamat specifically acknowledged Germany’s contributions to the Africa CDC, noting its assistance in strengthening continental pandemic response systems. The leaders also explored opportunities to accelerate the AfCFTA’s implementation through German technical expertise and investment in cross-border infrastructure.
With the AU-EU Summit approaching, both officials stressed the importance of intercontinental collaboration on climate finance and digital innovation. The meeting concluded with agreements to formalize new working groups on peacebuilding and trade facilitation, building on existing frameworks like the G20 Compact with Africa.
