Mogadishu, 23 January 2021 – The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) police component has launched a monthly deep clean-up exercise to thoroughly keep the environment clean.
Individual Police Officers (IPOs) serving under AMISOM in Mogadishu on Friday conducted a cleanup exercise of their living quarters at the AMISOM Force headquarters. The exercise will be conducted on the last Friday of every month.
The AMISOM Police Commissioner, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Augustine Kailie commended the police officers for the initiative, and called for greater personal and environmental hygiene.
“Our environment has to be conducive for our habitation. This is the reason why we have embarked on this clean-up exercise,” said AIGP Kailie.
The AMISOM Police Operations and Formed Police Unit Coordinator, DCP Daniel Ali Gwambal said the personnel cleaned the camp because they have a responsibility to keep their environment clean.
“We deemed it fit since we are the ones making use of this facility, to augment the cleanliness of this place. We decided to organise ourselves to make this place clean,” said DCP Gwambal.
AMISOM Police Gender Officer, CSP Stella Sedame noted the importance of sanitation in preventing and reducing COVID-19 and other diseases.
“COVID-19 goes hand in hand with poor hygiene. If we do not clean our environment and should there be an outbreak of any disease, it will affect us all,” said CSP Sedame.
