Algerian Government Rescues Somali Migrants After Boat Engine Fails at Sea

Algiers, Algeria (SONNA) – The Algerian government, in coordination with Somali diplomatic officials, successfully rescued 23 Somali migrants whose boat experienced engine failure approximately 80 kilometers off the coast of Algiers. Somali Ambassador to Algeria Yusuf Ahmed Hassan (Jeego) confirmed the operation, clarifying that while initial reports suggested the boat had capsized, the vessel had actually become stranded due to mechanical problems.

The rescue operation was launched after distressed migrants contacted relatives, who then alerted Somali authorities. Ambassador Jeego immediately engaged Algeria’s government through Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, prompting a swift response from the Algerian coast guard. “This operation demonstrates the importance of strong diplomatic channels in emergency situations,” the Ambassador stated, noting all 23 survivors – including men and women – were safely recovered and are currently receiving medical attention in Algerian hospitals.

This incident marks at least the fourth such rescue of Somali migrants in Mediterranean waters this year, highlighting the ongoing dangers of irregular migration routes. The Somali government has recently intensified efforts to combat human smuggling networks and raise awareness about the risks of dangerous sea crossings. Authorities are now working to verify the migrants’ identities and arrange appropriate next steps, which may include repatriation or other assistance measures.

The successful cooperation between Algerian and Somali officials in this emergency underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing migration challenges. As Somalia continues to strengthen its anti-smuggling measures, including specialized task forces and public awareness campaigns, incidents like this demonstrate both the persistent risks migrants face and the critical role of coordinated rescue efforts.
