Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Family and Human Rights Development of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, today launched the second phase of the Women’s Peace and Protection Joint Programme (WPP-II), a two-year national initiative aimed at advancing women’s rights and participation.
The launch event brought together senior officials from the United Nations and government institutions, including representatives from UN Women and United Nations Development Programme, alongside civil society actors.
WPP-II seeks to strengthen women’s participation in peacebuilding, leadership, and decision-making, while supporting the implementation of laws, policies, and systems that ensure meaningful inclusion and protection.
Led by the Federal Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development and implemented by UN Women and UNDP with technical support from United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia, the programme builds on lessons from its first phase to enhance coordination at both federal and state levels.
The initiative is expected to directly benefit 6,000 people and reach up to 42,000 overall, with a focus on girls, women with disabilities, minority groups, and internally displaced persons.
The programme will be implemented nationwide over 24 months, marking a significant step toward promoting peace, justice, and the protection of women’s rights in Somalia.
