MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Federal Republic of Somalia is actively executing a new phase of international cultural diplomacy. On April 15, 2026, the Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, H.E. Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala, officially participated in the Somalia National Pavilion preview in Mogadishu. Hosted by the Italian Embassy in Somalia, the high-level gathering convened government executives, international diplomats, educational directors, and prominent artists to finalize preparations for Somalia’s historic, first-time participation in the prestigious Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition in Italy.
This deployment represents a massive logistical and diplomatic victory for the nation. Running continuously from May through November 2026, the exhibition will feature a highly specialized delegation of three Somali female artists representing the republic on the global stage. They are strictly mandated to project Somalia’s rich heritage, specifically showcasing traditional art, historical incense, and classical literature. Operating alongside more than 90 participating nations—including 13 from the African continent—the Somali delegation will command a dedicated national space to directly engage and educate international audiences.
Delivering his official remarks at the Mogadishu preview, Deputy Minister Al-Adala clearly defined the strategic yield of this cultural deployment. He stated that securing a platform at the Venice Biennale guarantees Somalia a powerful, direct channel to broadcast its authentic cultural narrative to the world, actively bypassing traditional conflict-based lenses and allowing the international community to experience the diverse elements of Somali heritage.
The Venice Biennale, an institution operating for over a century, is widely recognized as the premier global arena for nations to display their cultural assets. By establishing a dedicated sovereign pavilion at this historic event, the Federal Government ensures that Somalia’s cultural identity is aggressively promoted, immediately creating new avenues for soft power, tourism potential, and high-level international engagement.
