Mayor of Mogadishu casts his vote for the Banadir Local Council Elections

Mogadishu (SONNA): The Governor of Benadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), on Thursday cast his vote in the Benadir Regional Local Council elections at a polling station in Karaan District, underscoring the historic significance of the vote for the people and the country’s democratic future.

The Governor stated that the election represents a concrete step toward restoring the people’s decision-making power and lays the groundwork for nationwide elections based on the “one person, one vote” system—an approach not practiced in Somalia for more than half a century.

“Today is a historic day on which the people of Mogadishu have regained their constitutional rights. The vote cast by each citizen is the foundation of strong statehood, lasting peace, and tangible development,” Dr. Muungaab said.

He noted that the new electoral system is expected to usher in greater prosperity, security, and stability, adding that governance and security in the capital have shown marked improvement over the past three years since President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, assumed office.

“The progress we are making today in security and governance is the result of the visionary leadership of our President and the National Government. The long queues of voters today demonstrate a clear public rejection of a return to indirect elections and to the ambitions of forces seeking to reverse progress,” he added.

The Governor commended election officials on duty and the people of Benadir Region for their cooperation in safeguarding peace, security, and public safety at a time when the nation is recording a defining chapter in reclaiming its standing. He emphasized that the strong public turnout is clear evidence of widespread support for Somali statehood and a sustained democratic transition.

In conclusion, the Governor called on all citizens to continue strengthening their participation in the democratic process to ensure a future founded on justice, peace, and sustainable development.
