Mogadishu, Somalia, SONNA – Somalia’s political leadership gathered last night to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the country’s Northern Regions from colonial rule. The solemn yet celebratory event, held at the Hamar Municipal Government House, saw the presence of Heads of State, underscoring the national significance of the occasion.

Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hamsa Abdi Barre, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the entire Somali community on this historic anniversary. In his address, the Prime Minister delivered a powerful message emphasizing the critical need for national unity, solidarity, and a concerted effort towards building a strong and cohesive nation.

“After 65 years, it is necessary to highlight the absence of unity, tribalism, and division, to correct what has gone wrong, and to embrace good thinking and wisdom,” stated Prime Minister Hamsa, directly addressing the enduring challenges facing the Somali people. His words served as a call to action for collective introspection and a renewed commitment to national cohesion.

The Prime Minister also reflected on the arduous struggle for independence, noting the immense bloodshed and sacrifice that paved the way for Somalia’s freedom. He highlighted that this hard-won independence was the catalyst for the aspirations of Somali unity, which ultimately led to the unification of the Northern and Southern regions on July 1st, establishing the Somali Republic.

The commemoration serves as a poignant reminder of Somalia’s journey to self-determination and the ongoing pursuit of a united, prosperous future.
