Mogadishu, SONNA – The Commissioner of the Disaster Management Agency, Mr. Mahmoud Moaallin Abdulle, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme in Somalia (UNDP Somalia), co-hosted a high-level meeting focused on renewable energy, climate resilience, and water management. The event brought together key stakeholders to strengthen cooperation and mobilize resources to tackle the impacts of climate change in the region.
The meeting, held in Mogadishu, aimed to promote climate resilience, expand access to green energy, and improve water management systems across Somalia. These efforts are critical for ensuring human survival and sustainable development in a country that has faced recurring droughts, floods, and other climate-related disasters.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Mahmoud Moaallin Abdulle emphasized the importance of integrating climate resilience into Somalia’s National Strategy and fostering strategic partnerships to address environmental challenges. The discussions highlighted the urgent need for long-term solutions to environmental management, with a focus on renewable energy and water conservation. Participants explored innovative approaches to harnessing solar, wind, and other green energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve energy access for Somali communities.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of improving water management systems to address water scarcity, a critical issue in Somalia. Effective water management is essential for agriculture, livestock, and human consumption, particularly in rural areas where access to clean water remains a challenge.

Notable attendees included the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Mr. Abdullahi Bidhaan, and the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Lieutenant General Bashir Mohamed Jama. Representatives from UNDP Somalia reiterated their support for Somalia’s efforts to combat climate change and build resilience. They emphasized the importance of international cooperation and funding to implement sustainable development projects in the country.
