For the first time in history, Somalia is not at the bottom of the Global Peace Index. This is a major achievement for the country and its people. For years, Somalia was ranked among the least peaceful nations in the world. Conflict, terrorism, and instability defined the country for decades. However, in 2024, Somalia has moved up the list, signalling a new era of hope and progress.
This success did not come easily. It is the result of hard work, determination, and sacrifice by the Somali people and their government. The Federal Government of Somalia launched an aggressive campaign against terror groups like Al Shabab and ISIS. These groups have terrorized Somalia for years, preventing peace and development. But now, their influence is shrinking. The government’s military operations, along with the support of international partners, have weakened these groups significantly.
The Fight Against Terrorism
Somalia’s biggest security challenge has always been terrorism. Al Shabab has carried out deadly attacks for over a decade, killing innocent civilians, targeting government officials, and destroying infrastructure. The group controlled large parts of the country, forcing people to live in fear.
The Somali government, with the support of local militias and international allies, decided to take strong action. Military operations were launched in key regions, targeting terrorist hideouts and cutting off their sources of funding. As a result, the group lost many of its strongholds. Villages and towns once under terrorist control were liberated.
One of the key strategies was empowering local communities. Clan militias joined forces with government troops to fight against the terrorists. This unity among Somalis played a major role in defeating the group. The terrorists no longer had the same influence they once had.
Improving Stability and Governance
Security is not just about fighting terrorists. It is also about strengthening governance and the rule of law. The Somali government has made great efforts to improve governance. Corruption is being tackled, and government institutions are becoming more effective.
Local administrations are being strengthened, allowing communities to manage their own affairs with support from the central government. Police forces have been trained and deployed across the country to maintain law and order.
Economic growth is also contributing to stability. Businesses are opening, trade is increasing, and investors are beginning to show interest in Somalia. The construction of roads, markets, and ports is helping to rebuild the country’s economy. More job opportunities are being created, giving young people alternatives to joining extremist groups.
International Support and Cooperation
Somalia has not achieved this progress alone. The support of international partners has been crucial. The African Union, the United Nations, and other global organizations have assisted Somalia in various ways. Training Somali forces, providing intelligence, and offering financial aid have all contributed to improving security.
Neighboring countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti have also played a role. Cooperation with these nations has helped in preventing cross-border attacks and controlling the movement of terrorists.
The Somali diaspora has also contributed. Many Somalis living abroad are investing in their homeland, supporting development projects, and helping to rebuild their country. Their financial and intellectual contributions are shaping Somalia’s new future.
A New Chapter for Somalia
The improvement in Somalia’s ranking on the Global Peace Index is a sign of real change. For years, the country was seen as a failed state. The mention of Somalia brought images of war, piracy, and terrorism. But today, Somalia is telling a different story.
People can now walk in the streets without constant fear. Markets are open, businesses are running, and schools are operating. The youth have more opportunities to build their future. Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, once known for daily bombings, is experiencing a rebirth. Other cities and towns are also seeing a return to normal life.
This does not mean Somalia’s problems are over. Challenges still exist, and the journey to lasting peace is not complete. However, the progress made so far is undeniable. It shows that Somalia is capable of change, growth, and development.
The Road Ahead
Somalia’s journey toward peace and stability must continue. The government should maintain its efforts to fight terrorism, strengthen governance, and build the economy. More investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure is needed.
Somalis, both inside and outside the country, must work together to support this progress. The world should also continue supporting Somalia’s development. A stable Somalia benefits not just its people but the entire region and beyond.
