NIRA launches National ID card printing for Somalia

Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced the official launch of Somalia’s National ID Card printing, marking a historic milestone towards establishing a unified and secure identification system. This initiative aims to empower Somali citizens and facilitate access to essential services and fundamental rights.

H.E. Ali Yusuf Ali (Ali Hosh), Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, along with Deputy Minister H.E. Abdihakim Hassan Ashkir, officially inaugurated the ID card printing process by receiving their own cards. The Minister commended NIRA for achieving this significant milestone, which paves the way for a reliable national identification framework.

“We deeply appreciate the patience and support of the Somali people during the implementation of this historic initiative and apologize for any delays in the card printing process,” said NIRA Director-General Abdiwali Ali Abdulle (Timacadde). “The extended timeline was necessary to prioritize acquiring state-of-the-art equipment and high-quality materials, a goal we are proud to have achieved.”

NIRA also announced that citizens who registered at its various centers will receive an SMS notification once their ID cards are ready. The message will include precise details about when and where they can collect their cards, ensuring an orderly and efficient distribution process.

The agency remains committed to expanding the National Identification System nationwide. Following the establishment of its regional office in Baidoa, South West State, at the end of last year, NIRA plans to inaugurate additional centers in other federal member states soon.

NIRA urges all Somali citizens to register at its centers, reassuring the public that the streamlined ID card printing and registration processes now guarantee quicker issuance of cards. This development represents a significant leap forward in enhancing the country’s administrative and service delivery systems.
