Mogadishu(SONNA):-The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Dr Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, took part in a pivotal trilateral summit on October 10, 2024, in Asmara, Eritrea. Hosted by H.E. Isaias Afwerki, President of Eritrea, the summit welcomed H.E. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The leaders engaged in comprehensive consultations on regional and international issues, focusing on fostering regional stability, cooperation, and adherence to the core principles of international law.
The leaders emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations in the region. They reaffirmed their commitment to preventing interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Together, they agreed to coordinate efforts to promote peace and stability while empowering Somalia’s state institutions. This includes enhancing the capabilities of the Somali National Army to combat terrorism and protect Somalia’s land and maritime borders.
Key topics discussed during the summit included the crisis in Sudan, regional security, and cooperation among the coastal states bordering the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait. The leaders welcomed Egypt’s proposal to contribute peacekeeping forces to Somalia and agreed to establish a trilateral joint committee, led by the Foreign Ministers of Eritrea, Egypt, and Somalia, to further enhance strategic cooperation. This summit reaffirms the dedication of all three countries to advancing peace, stability, and development in the region.
