Somali National Army (SNA) and Galmudug State forces have made significant gains against the Alshabaab militant group in the southern part of the Mudug region in recent days, according to military sources.
The joint forces have liberated several strategic areas from the Alshabaab control, including Shabellow, which was the group’s largest stronghold in the area, Adaley village, the road linking Amara and Ellhur, and Bur Yagoos. The sources said that the Alshabaab fighters fled from many towns and villages without putting up much resistance, as they were overwhelmed by the advancing forces.
The SNA and Galmudug forces have been in control of Aad town, that has been under Alshabaab occupation for years, and are preparing to launch further operations to clear the remaining pockets of the group in the region. The military offensive is part of the ongoing efforts by the Somali government and its regional allies to eliminate the threat of Alshabaab, which has been waging a violent insurgency against the people of Somalia for over a decade leaving a trail of death and destruction.
