Mogadishu, Somalia – SONNA – The United Kingdom has lauded Somalia for its groundbreaking achievement in implementing a comprehensive ammunition management plan, a global first that significantly contributes to national security and stability. This commendation coincides with a crucial high-level meeting in Mogadishu between Somalia’s Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction & Housing and the new British Ambassador, signaling robust cooperation across development and security sectors.

On June 12, 2025, Dr. Ilmi Mohamoud Nur, the Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction & Housing of the Federal Government of Somalia, hosted a significant meeting with Mr. Charles King, the newly appointed Ambassador of the British Government to Somalia. The encounter served as a formal welcome and an in-depth consultation on strategies to enhance cooperation between the two friendly nations. Discussions primarily focused on critical areas such as rebuilding vital infrastructure, fostering urban development, and elevating the quality of essential public services across Somalia. Both the Minister and the Ambassador expressed their unwavering commitment to strengthening the historical relationship that binds Somalia and the United Kingdom, agreeing to pursue close collaboration on issues of mutual interest in both the immediate and long term.

Adding to the positive momentum in bilateral relations, the British Embassy in Somalia specifically highlighted the UK government’s immense satisfaction with Somalia’s recent achievements in security. The UK government extended strong praise for Somalia’s successful implementation of an ammunition management plan, recognizing it as the first of its kind globally. This pioneering initiative involves a modern and sophisticated system designed to meticulously track ammunition, a critical measure for maintaining security and preventing the proliferation of weapons into unauthorized hands. The British Embassy affirmed its pleasure in having supported this vital ammunition management project, celebrating the demonstrable success led by the Federal Government of Somalia.

These developments collectively portray a dynamic and constructive partnership between Somalia and the United Kingdom. The UK’s consistent support for Somalia spans various crucial areas, including security sector reform, humanitarian aid, and broader reconstruction efforts. The successful implementation of the ammunition management plan is a clear manifestation of the Somali government’s dedication to establishing enduring peace and stability, efforts that are evidently resonating positively with its international partners.

The convergences in high-level diplomatic exchanges and tangible security achievements underscore a shared vision for a more stable, prosperous, and self-reliant Somalia. As Somalia continues its path of recovery and state-building, the collaborative spirit and strategic partnership with the United Kingdom will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in realizing the nation’s ambitious development goals and ensuring long-term security.
