MOGADISHU – The military court in Mogadishu handed down prison sentences to two men who confessed to being part of the Khawarij terrorist group that has been behind a series of attacks and explosions in the capital city.
The convicts, identified as Ahmed Hassan Barriyow and Adam Mohamed Qoslaaye, admitted to joining the extremist group in 2012 and 2020 respectively, and acting as informants who tracked the targets of the assassinations and bombings in Mogadishu and its outskirts.
The court heard that the two men were friends who used to consume a drug known as Hashish, and that Barriyow, who had a decade-long affiliation with the Khawarij, recruited Qoslaaye into the group.
The military court judge sentenced Barriyow to 15 years in military detention, while Qoslaaye received a five-year sentence. The judge said the sentences were based on the gravity of the crimes and the level of involvement of the defendants.
