Baidoa, (SONNA) — The training, jointly organized by the Federal Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, and the South West State Ministry of Information and Awareness, brought together 20 journalists from various media outlets across the region.
The Minister of Information for South West State, Hon. Mohamed Ibrahim Bilal, today officially closed a two-day workshop on Media Ethics in Reporting Elections in Somalia, held in the city of Baidoa.
The Director of Communication Strategy at the Federal Ministry of Information, Abdishakur Ali Ahmed, emphasized that the purpose of the training was to strengthen journalists’ understanding of responsible and ethical election reporting in line with journalistic principles and electoral laws. He thanked the participating journalists for their engagement.
“I’m pleased that this two-day training has concluded successfully. A similar workshop was previously held in Mogadishu, and the Ministry plans to roll out these trainings across all Federal Member States to enhance the role of the media in credible and ethical election coverage,” he said.
Chairman of the South West Journalists’ Association, Mr. Muxudiin Hassan Mohamed (Xusni praised the collaboration between the two ministries and urged journalists to implement the knowledge gained from the training in their daily reporting.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Mohamed Bilal, Minister ofthe week? Information and Awareness of South West State, stated that the workshop came at a critical time, as the country is undergoing voter registration processes nationwide. He encouraged journalists to play a proactive role in disseminating information grounded in professional ethics and electoral transparency.
This Media Ethics in covering Elections workshop is the second in a national series workshop organised by Federal Ministry of Information with the support of the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), aimed at equipping Somali journalists with the tools and ethical guidance necessary for covering the upcoming elections effectively and professionally.
