Mogadishu, SONNA – Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has confirmed that Türkiye’s seismic research vessel, Oruç Reis, along with its support ships and frigates from the Turkish Naval Forces, has successfully passed through the Suez Canal and is now on its way to Somali waters. This announcement marks a major milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties between Türkiye and Somalia.
The Oruç Reis, a symbol of Türkiye’s expertise in maritime exploration, departed from Istanbul on October 5, 2024, following an official farewell ceremony. Its mission, part of the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, was made possible through the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement recently signed between Türkiye and Somalia.
Once it reaches Somalia, the Oruç Reis will engage in seismic research aimed at exploring oil and gas reserves in Somali waters. This mission underscores the increasing collaboration between Türkiye and Somalia in the fields of energy and defense, and it is expected to significantly contribute to Somalia’s economic development.
Both nations view this initiative as a key step in fostering long-term cooperation and enhancing the exploration of natural resources in the region.
This operation reflects Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s development.
