El-Garas, Galgaduud – September 13, 2023 – The notorious extremist group Al-Shabaab targeted a critical water well in El-Garas town, Galgaduud, this morning. The explosion, triggered by a concealed explosive device, left one person injured, who was fetching water from the well at the time of the incident.

The well, a lifeline for El-Garas and its surrounding areas, served as the primary water source for the local population. This deliberate act of violence has disrupted the daily lives of countless residents who rely on this vital resource.

Al-Shabaab’s destructive actions come in the wake of their expulsion from El-Garas just a week ago. Before their retreat from the town, the extremist group planted explosives on key installations, posing an ongoing threat to the community. In response, the military has launched an extensive security operation to eliminate sleeper cells and remove any remaining hidden explosives left behind by the terrorists.

This renewed military campaign against Al-Shabaab has intensified in recent days, leading to the liberation of substantial areas that were previously under the group’s control. The concerted efforts of the military aim to restore peace and stability to the region, ensuring the safety and well-being of the local population.

Local authorities are working diligently to repair the damaged water well and provide immediate relief to the affected residents. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the region in its fight against extremism and terrorism. The international community continues to stand in solidarity with the people of El-Garas, Galgaduud, as they work towards a secure and prosperous future.
