WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a series of pivotal meetings held in Washington, the Minister of Finance of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Bihi Iman Ige, has been actively engaging with international counterparts during the spring conference of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Norway’s Support in Debt Forgiveness: During a productive encounter with Mrs. Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, the Minister of International Development of the Government of Norway, Mr.Ige expressed gratitude for Norway’s instrumental role in Somalia’s debt forgiveness process. The discussions highlighted the successful stages of financial reform that Somalia has undergone, leading to significant debt relief for the nation.
United Kingdom’s Solidarity: A separate meeting with Mr. Nick Dyer, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Development Office, focused on the current state of Somalia’s economy. The talks centered on collaborative efforts to enhance revenue generation and financial strategies amidst the challenges posed by climate change. The Minister of Finance XFS also acknowledged the UK Government’s recent decision to cancel all debts owed by the Somali Government, marking a complete debt forgiveness.
IMF’s Future Plans for Somalia: An important dialogue took place between the Somali delegation, led by Mr.Ige, and Mr. Jihad Azur, the Director General of the IMF for Arab and Central Asian countries. The conversation revolved around the IMF’s upcoming plans for Somalia’s financial and economic development over the next three years.
These meetings underscore Somalia’s commitment to economic advancement and achieving financial self-sufficiency. With the burden of debt lifted, the government is poised to implement comprehensive funding strategies that will propel the country towards a more robust and independent economic future.
