New York; December 12, 2023; Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led a UN meeting on Somalia security in New York on Tuesday, where he stressed the importance of the region for Somalia’s statehood and security.
The meeting, which Somalia organized was attended by 26 countries including the United Nations, the Arab League, the European Union and the African Union. The President present plans for rebuilding the security forces, clearing terrorist-controlled areas, enhancing regional and international security cooperation, withdrawing ATMIS troops and ensuring Somalia’s political stability.
“Reducing the number of ATMIS troops in Somalia, which is in progress, proves the advances we have made in securing Somalia with our own security agencies that fully take over the security responsibility of the country,” the President said.
The President of the Republic thanked the UN Security Council members for supporting lifting the arms embargo on Somalia, and for backing the debt relief and the Somali National Army’s development.
“We welcome the UN Security Council’s historic decision to lift the arms embargo on Somalia. This is a significant victory for Somalia, and it shows the remarkable progress achieved in managing arms and ammunition, as this decision enables us to fully equip the Somali National Army,” he added.
The meeting’s attendees included the United States, Britain, Turkey, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, India, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Uganda, Burundi, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, Spain, Norway, the Arab League, the African Union and the European Union.
