Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Department of Space and Satellites at Somalia’s Ministry of Communications and Technology participated virtually in the 48th annual meeting of Arabsat, held on July 15, 2025.
The session approved the 2024 annual financial report and budget closing, and elected new members to the Board of Directors who will serve during the 2025–2026 term. Member states were also formally notified that detailed reports on outstanding debts owed by each country will be shared to ensure financial alignment, protect institutional stability, and sustain the organization’s service delivery.
It was also agreed that the next annual meeting in 2026 will be held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which hosts Arabsat’s headquarters. The 2026 gathering will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Arabsat’s founding.
During the meeting, the board provided an overview of the organization’s status and operations across 2024 and 2025.
Speaking on behalf of Somalia, Director of the Department of Space and Satellites, Mr. Mohamed Abubakar, delivered a speech highlighting Somalia’s strong commitment to playing an active and visible role in Arab space initiatives. He emphasized the importance of strengthening regional cooperation in space technology.
Somalia’s participation in this high-level forum reflects the Ministry’s strategic focus on enhancing Arab cooperation and advancing the country’s engagement in the development of space technology. The Somali delegation to the meeting included Mr. Mohamed Abubakar, Mr. Abubakar Hassan, and Mr. Ali Afey.
