Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hon. Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), officially launched a pioneering Internet of Things (IoT) training program today at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mogadishu. The initiative is aimed at equipping young Somali professionals with modern agricultural technology skills to address the country’s farming challenges.
Out of 776 applicants — half of whom were women — 50 young men and women were selected for the program. They will receive hands-on training in smart farming technologies, including modern irrigation systems, crop monitoring tools, and digital solutions to support sustainable agricultural practices.
The initiative seeks to inspire youth and innovators to embrace technology as a tool to modernize Somalia’s agricultural sector and drive job creation and economic growth.
The six-week training is being delivered by the Jamhuriya Incubation Center (JIC), in collaboration with the Ministry’s Center for Innovation and Agribusiness Development (CIAD).
