Mogadishu, (SONNA) – In a landmark moment, Somalia has used its platform as a newly inducted non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council to declare a resolute position on the Palestinian cause. During its first official participation in a Security Council meeting, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abukar Osman Baalle, strongly condemned Israel’s actions against civilians in occupied Palestinian territories and called for immediate international intervention.
Speaking at the session, Ambassador Baalle underscored Somalia’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people, denouncing the escalating violence in Gaza. He expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis, highlighting the devastating impact on civilians, particularly women and children.
“Somalia is gravely concerned about the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the ongoing atrocities faced by the Palestinian people. We strongly urge Israel to respond to the international community’s calls for restraint and to allow unhindered humanitarian assistance to those in need,” Ambassador Baalle stated.
The ambassador also painted a grim picture of the conditions on the ground, pointing to widespread malnutrition and a severe health crisis. “The civilian population, especially women and children, faces critical challenges, including acute food shortages and worsening malnutrition. The international community must act swiftly to prevent further escalation,” he added.
Somalia’s stance on Palestine reaffirms its commitment to justice and human rights, a message it aims to amplify during its tenure on the Security Council. While advocating for peace and stability in the Middle East, Somalia also intends to prioritize regional and global peacebuilding efforts, leveraging its seat to address pressing issues affecting vulnerable populations worldwide.
This declaration not only signals Somalia’s re-engagement on the global stage but also sets the tone for its diplomatic priorities in the months ahead.
