The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, will join more than 100 other world leaders at the 6th Conference of the United Nations Organization for Environmental Affairs, which will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, this week.
The conference will focus on the challenges and solutions of climate change and its impact on disasters, such as floods, droughts, and storms. Somalia is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change, having suffered from severe El Nino flooding rains in recent years, which have claimed lives, damaged property, and disrupted economic activities.
President Mohamud has been a vocal advocate for environmental protection and management in Somalia, and has signed a new law that was passed by the Federal Parliament of Somalia, to regulate and conserve the country’s natural resources. He is expected to deliver a speech at the conference, highlighting the achievements and challenges of Somalia in addressing climate change and its consequences.
