Mogadishu, SONNA — As dawn breaks over Mogadishu’s General Da’ud Military Academy, the crisp marching of boots echoes a 65-year legacy. April 12th marks more than the Somali National Army’s (SNA) anniversary, it commemorates the living embodiment of national resilience, from its 1960 founding to its modern counterterrorism triumphs.

Every nation cherishes special days that commemorate the bravery and dedication of patriots who fought for unity, sovereignty, and national defense. For Somalia, April 12th holds a particularly profound significance, it marks the founding of the Somali National Army (SNA), an institution that has safeguarded the nation and contributed to regional security for 65 years.

The Birth of a National Force

On April 12, 1960, the Somali National Army was officially established as the backbone of the Somali state. It was envisioned not only as a guardian of national security but also as a force capable of contributing to stability across the Horn of Africa. Its foundational duties ranged from protecting borders and defending citizens to fighting terrorism and maintaining internal security.

From its early years, the army demonstrated a commitment to excellence, establishing diverse leadership divisions to oversee key military operations. Over time, these divisions expanded to include financial management, logistics, training, firefighting, healthcare, communication, and security, among others. This structure enabled the SNA to carry out crucial missions with discipline and efficiency.

Historic Achievements and Challenges

Between 1964 and 1977, the Somali National Army achieved historic victories, reclaiming lost territories and proving itself as a formidable force. With unwavering public support, the government nurtured a strong, well-equipped army that embodied the resilience and determination of the Somali people. However, the outbreak of civil war in 1991 dealt a severe blow to the institution, disrupting its structure and operations.

Despite the challenges, the past two decades have witnessed a determined resurgence of the SNA. Efforts to rebuild and revitalize military units have led to the successful regrouping of forces and recruitment of young, skilled personnel committed to restoring peace and security. Today, the armed forces continue to play a vital role in countering threats, protecting citizens, and contributing to national development.

The Road to a Stronger Military

As Somalia navigates contemporary security challenges, strengthening the armed forces remains a priority. The government has underscored the need for advanced military training, modern equipment, and comprehensive development programs to empower the army in fulfilling its duties. With determination and strategic support, the Somali National Army is poised to reclaim its full potential, ensuring national security and stability for future generations.

On this momentous occasion, Somalia’s Head of State extended heartfelt congratulations to the officers, deputies, soldiers, and their families in recognition of their sacrifices and dedication. The leadership expressed confidence that the army will continue to achieve new milestones in its mission to protect and serve the nation.

As Somalia celebrates 65 years of the Somali National Army, the tribute goes beyond honoring its legacy, it serves as a reminder of the vital role the armed forces play in safeguarding national unity, territorial integrity, and peace. The country looks forward to a future where its military stands stronger, resilient, and ready to face new challenges with courage.

Happy Somali National Army Day
