MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), Mr. Daa’uud Aweys Jaama, met with journalists and media representatives in Mogadishu on Saturday, where he discussed the security of journalists and the challenges they face in their work.

The minister said that the FGS is committed to protecting the rights and safety of journalists, and ensuring that the media operates well in the country. He said that the government is ready to address the issues that affect the media sector, such as legal reforms, capacity building, and access to information.

He also stressed that the media has a vital role in society, and therefore it needs to adhere to the principles and ethics of journalism. He said that the government will not tolerate any media outlet that works in a dishonest or biased way, or that incites violence or hatred.

The minister urged journalists to improve their professional skills and knowledge, and promised that the FGS will support the independent and pluralistic media to work well in the country. He said that the FGS values the contribution of the media to the development and stability of Somalia.

The meeting was attended by representatives of various media organizations, such as the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS), the Somali Media Association (SOMA), and the Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ). The participants exchanged views on how to enhance the cooperation between the government and the media, and how to promote freedom of expression and access to information in Somalia.

The meeting lasted for about two hours and focused on ensuring media freedom and monitoring the security of journalists. The minister said that he will hold regular consultations with the media stakeholders, and that he will establish a mechanism to address the complaints and concerns of journalists. He also said that he will work with other relevant ministries and agencies to improve the media environment in Somalia.
