Mogadishu, Somalia – The Council of Ministers of the Federal Republic of Somalia convened for its weekly meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre. During this session, two crucial laws were approved, directly impacting the electoral process and political landscape in the country.
The Federal Republic of Somalia Elections Act outlines the framework for conducting elections, ensuring that the Somali people have a voice in selecting their leaders. It mandates a nationwide “People and Voice” election, allowing citizens to cast their votes directly for the candidates they believe will best represent their interests.
The Political Parties Act provides guidelines for political parties, shaping their roles, responsibilities, and conduct within the democratic process. By regulating political organizations, it aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and fair competition during elections.
Mr. Farhan Mohamed Jimale, the government spokesperson, emphasized the significance of these rules. He stated, “The Electoral Law marks a departure from the old system of indirect elections that has been in place for an extended period. Now, every Somali citizen has the right to vote directly for their preferred leader.”
These legislative changes signal a commitment to democratic principles and pave the way for a more inclusive and participatory electoral process in Somalia.
