Somali FM Celebrates 65th Independence Day with Government Officials in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, July 01, 2025 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, participated in a ceremony marking the 65th Independence Day of Somalia, held on the evening of Monday, July 1, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania. The event took place at the newly constructed Embassy of Somalia and brought together officials from both countries, diplomatic representatives, and members of the Somali community.

In his keynote address, Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali reflected on the significance of the day, highlighting Somalia’s historic struggle for independence and the enduring values of unity, sovereignty, and national pride. He honored the sacrifices made by previous generations and underscored the importance of preserving Somalia’s independence through diplomacy and continued cooperation.

Other Somali dignitaries in attendance included the Minister of Livestock, Forestry and Range, Hon. Hassan Hussein Mohamed (Eelaay), and members of the Federal Parliament. Representing Tanzania, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Amb. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, participated alongside other senior officials.

The celebration opened with the raising of the Somali flag and the playing of the national anthem. Ambassador Ilyas Ali Hassan welcomed guests and spoke about the lasting importance of July 1, describing it as a symbol of national unity and hope.

Somalia’s Independence Day commemorates the historic unification of the North and South regions on July 1, 1960, which led to the formation of the Somali Republic. It remains a day of national reflection, pride, and a renewed commitment to peace, development, and the country’s sovereign aspirations.
