A high-level delegation from the Somali government visited Sabun Dam on the outskirts of Jowhar City on Friday, to inspect the condition of the dam and to discuss the plans for flood prevention and mitigation.
The delegation was led by the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA) Mr. Mohamud Maallim Abdulle, and included the Minister of Interior Hirshabelle Abdirahman Dahir Gure, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Relief, the Governor of Middle Shabelle Ahmed Mayre Makraan, and other officials.
The officials toured the various parts of the dam, which was built after last year’s devastating El Niño floods that displaced thousands of people and damaged crops and infrastructure in the region.
The Chairman of the SoDMA said that the dam was a vital project for the protection of the people and the environment, and that they would work on the restoration of the channel that connects the dam to the Shabelle River.
He also thanked the Somali people and the international partners for their support and cooperation in the construction and maintenance of the dam.
The Minister of Interior Hirshabelle said that the dam was a strategic asset for the Hirshabelle State, and that they would coordinate with the federal government and the SoDMA to ensure the proper management and security of the dam.
