Harare, (SONNA) — Somalia’s Ambassador to Tanzania and the East African Community (EAC), Amb. Ilyas Sheikh Omar, represented Somalia at crucial meetings in Harare, Zimbabwe, focused on restoring peace and stability in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The joint session, attended by foreign affairs and defense ministers from EAC and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states, centered on coordinated efforts to address the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC. Ambassador Ilyas served as the EAC rapporteur, alongside Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, who chaired the meeting, and EAC Secretary-General Veronica Nduva.
During the summit, Ambassador Ilyas held sideline talks with several leaders, including DRC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to supporting lasting peace and stability in the region.
The ambassador also raised concerns about the situation of Somali nationals facing hardships in the DRC, discussing potential measures to address their challenges.
