Mogadishu, Somalia – November 24, 2024: The National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the Qatar Red Crescent Society have entered into a strategic partnership. The memorandum of understanding was signed today at the SoDMA headquarters by the Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mr. Mahmoud Ma’alin Abdulle, and the Qatar Red Crescent Society’s representative in Somalia, Mr. Ahmed Aadam Hamid.

This landmark agreement outlines a comprehensive plan to assist the Somali people affected by the devastating floods. Key components of the agreement include:

  • Flood Assistance: Provision of immediate relief to flood-affected communities.
  • Infrastructure Repair and Development: Repairing and constructing dams to mitigate future flood risks.
  • Agricultural Support: Encouraging farmers to plant seeds to ensure food security and livelihood restoration.
  • Emergency Health Services: Cooperation in emergency healthcare, including the opening of new health centers.
  • Water Resource Management: Repairing damaged water wells in affected districts to restore access to clean water.
  • Capacity Building: Improving the knowledge and skills of health professionals through targeted training programs.

Under the terms of the agreement, SoDMA will take the lead in distributing resources and coordinating efforts with the Ministries of Relief at the regional level. The implementation of this agreement will focus primarily on areas most affected by the El-Niño floods, ensuring that aid reaches those in dire need.

“The partnership with the Qatar Red Crescent Society represents an important step towards building resilience and ensuring sustainable recovery for our flood-affected communities,” said Mr. Abdulle. “We are committed to working closely with our partners to bring immediate relief and foster long-term development.”

This collaboration shows the importance of international cooperation in addressing natural disasters and promoting sustainable development. By combining resources and expertise, SoDMA and the Qatar Red Crescent Society aim to create a more resilient and self-sufficient Somalia.

Mr. Ahmed Aadam Hamid emphasized the Qatar Red Crescent Society’s dedication to supporting Somalia during this challenging time. “We are honored to partner with SoDMA in this critical initiative. Together, we will work to alleviate suffering and build a brighter future for the Somali people,” he stated.

The signing of this memorandum marks a hopeful turn for Somalia, as the nation continues to navigate the challenges posed by natural disasters. With committed leadership and robust international support, Somalia is poised to make significant strides towards recovery and sustainable development.
