(SONNA Bujumbura, Burundi) – In a significant diplomatic engagement, His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, was warmly received in Bujumbura on his official working visit to the Republic of Burundi, aimed at bolstering the bilateral relations between the two East African nations.

The Somali President, upon the gracious invitation of his Burundian counterpart, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, commenced his visit with a reception at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport, followed by a series of high-level meetings with Burundian officials including Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro. These meetings marked a reaffirmation of the strong ties that bind Somalia and Burundi, not only at a governmental level but also in terms of the solidarity between their people.

In a display of diplomatic camaraderie, the two leaders held a tête-à-tête to re-emphasize their commitment to cooperation across various sectors. President Mohamud praised Burundi’s efforts in peace and security, particularly highlighting the role of Burundian troops in the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Similarly, President Ndayishimiye lauded President Mohamud for his tireless efforts in the realms of democracy and development within Somalia.

A notable outcome of this visit was the decision to convene a future session of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPCC), which promises to further deepen the ties between the two countries. The discussions also touched upon regional stability, with both heads of state reaffirming their commitment to the goals of the East African Community and the African Union, particularly in the realm of economic growth and intra-African trade.

This visit underscores a shared vision for a peaceful and prosperous East Africa, with both nations acknowledging the importance of collaboration to achieve stability and development. As Somalia and Burundi continue to work together, this engagement is a testament to the enduring strength and potential of African unity.

The details of the JPCC session are yet to be finalized, but the anticipation of fruitful outcomes from this high-level cooperation remains high among stakeholders within both nations and the wider international community.
