Mogadishu, Somalia – The nation is shrouded in grief as it bids farewell to one of its most esteemed statesmen. On this solemn day, we remember the life and legacy of Prof. Mohamed Osman Jawari, former Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament, who passed away in Mogadishu on June 28, 2024, at the age of 79.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed profound grief over Prof. Jawari’s passing. In a heartfelt statement, he acknowledged the historical significance of the former Speaker’s contributions.

“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ileyhi Rajicun.” I extend my deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and the nation of Somalia for the loss of the former Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari. He dedicated many years to serving our nation and leaves behind a commendable legacy. His prominent role in the restoration of the Somali government will be remembered.

President Hassan Sheikh prayed to the late, God to grant him Paradise, patience and faith for all of us. He extended his deepest condolences to Prof. Jawari’s family, relatives, and the entire Somali nation.

Born in the Afgoye district of the Lower Shabelle region in 1945, Prof. Jawari’s journey was marked by undeterred dedication to his country. Although his birthplace was Afgoye, he was officially registered in the Burhakaba district of the Bay region. His educational path led him to the Somali National University, where he specialized in Islamic Sharia and Comprehensive Law. Throughout his life, he played a pivotal role in shaping Somalia’s legal and constitutional landscape, dating back to the country’s independence in 1960.

Prof. Jawari’s political career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Somalia’s governance. He served as a minister during the administration of Siad Barre, a time when Somalia was united under a centralized government. His expertise extended beyond politics; he was also a lawyer and contributed significantly to the development of various Somali constitutions.

In the aftermath of Somalia’s civil war and the collapse of Barre’s regime in 1991, Prof. Jawari continued to work tirelessly for the reconstruction of the nation. He was among the leaders who sacrificed their lives and resources to rebuild government institutions. His commitment to Somalia’s restoration was unwavering, and he played a prominent role in the establishment of democratic processes.

Prof. Jawari’s legacy extends beyond borders. His academic pursuits took him to Norway, where he continued to engage with global institutions. As a lawyer, politician, and scholar, he exemplified the spirit of service and sacrifice.

The loss of Prof. Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari leaves a void in Somalia’s political landscape. As the nation mourns, we honor his memory and reflect on the enduring impact of his life’s work. May he find eternal peace, and may his legacy inspire future generations to serve Somalia with dedication and love.

“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ileyhi Rajicun.”
