Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab as the new Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, effective Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The appointment follows a recommendation from the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, marking Dr. Muungaab’s return to a position he previously held with notable contributions to Mogadishu’s reconstruction and development of public services.

President Mohamud emphasized Dr. Muungaab’s extensive experience and proven track record as key factors in the decision, urging the new governor to prioritize critical areas including the capital’s urban development, community reconciliation initiatives, enhanced collaboration between security forces and residents, and the expansion of essential public services. These priorities align with the federal government’s broader agenda for stability and progress in the region.

The President called upon all government institutions to provide full support and cooperation to the new Banadir administration, expressing confidence in Dr. Muungaab’s ability to lead Mogadishu toward greater prosperity. He extended his best wishes for success in what he described as a significant responsibility serving the people of the capital city.

This leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for Somalia as the government continues to advance its state-building efforts, with Mogadishu’s development representing a central component of national stabilization and growth strategies. Dr. Muungaab’s reappointment signals continuity in the administration’s approach to urban governance while addressing ongoing challenges in infrastructure, security and public welfare.

The federal government anticipates this transition will strengthen institutional capacity and service delivery in Banadir region, reinforcing Mogadishu’s role as Somalia’s political and economic hub. Authorities have expressed optimism that Dr. Muungaab’s previous experience and understanding of the capital’s needs will translate into tangible improvements for residents and businesses.
