MOGADISHU, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held high-level discussions with a senior delegation from the World Bank at the Villa Somalia Presidential Palace on Thursday, signaling a renewed focus on the nation’s economic trajectory and development agenda. The meeting, which included World Bank Division Director Qimiao Fan and Country Manager Hideki Matsunaga, centered on advancing the robust partnership between the Federal Government of Somalia and the international financial institution.

The dialogue primarily focused on the critical necessity of sustaining macroeconomic stability as Somalia enters a new phase of economic recovery. President Mohamud and the World Bank officials explored strategies to fortify the nation’s fiscal frameworks, ensuring that the hard-won gains in financial governance are preserved and expanded. The leaders acknowledged that maintaining a stable economic environment is a prerequisite for attracting foreign direct investment and fostering domestic growth.

Beyond fiscal policy, the meeting addressed the acceleration of priority investments in key sectors that directly impact the livelihoods of Somali citizens. Particular emphasis was placed on infrastructure development and the energy sector. The President highlighted the government’s determination to bridge the infrastructure gap and improve energy access, citing these areas as essential drivers for industrialization and job creation. The World Bank representatives reiterated their support for these transformative projects, which are designed to unlock the country’s economic potential.

The discussions also touched upon the broader geopolitical context, specifically the Horn of Africa Initiative. Both parties examined ways to deepen regional integration through cross-border cooperation and trade facilitation. By actively participating in this initiative, Somalia aims to position itself as a central hub for commerce and connectivity in East Africa. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to fast-track the implementation of agreed-upon projects, ensuring that the partnership delivers tangible results for the Somali people and contributes to the stability of the wider region.
