Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development (MoPIED) of the Federal Government of Somalia convened a high-level Food Security and Nutrition coordination meeting in Mogadishu, amid severe drought conditions threatening livelihoods.
The meeting was chaired by the Minister of MoPIED, HE. Mohamud A. Sheikh Farah (Beenebeene), and brought together government Ministers, including the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation; the Minister of Livestock, Forestry and Range; the Minister of Energy and Water Resources; the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy; the Deputy Minister of Health and Human Services; the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority; the Director-General of MoPIED; and Directors-General from relevant line ministries and institutions.
The Minister of Planning outlined the objectives of the meeting, emphasising the importance of reliable data, effective inter-institutional coordination, and evidence-based planning to respond efficiently to food insecurity and malnutrition, and to mitigate the impacts of recurrent droughts.
Key discussions included updates on drought, progress on the Food Security and Nutrition Plan, and efforts to strengthen inter-institutional coordination. Participants examined the roles of ministries, data verification processes, and mechanisms to enhance information flow.
The session agreed on regular coordination meetings, enhanced data sharing, and closer collaboration with international partners, with the ministry reaffirming its leadership role in coordinating national food security efforts in accordance with Somalia’s development priorities.
