January 20, 2025 – It’s January again in Somalia, a time to reflect on progress, resilience, and the leaders driving the country toward a brighter future. Once more, Five Magazine has named Dr. Mohamed Osman Mohamoud, Somalia’s National Economic Advisor to the President and a member of the National Economic Council, as one of the nation’s most influential figures. This recognition for the second consecutive year is a testament to Dr. Osman’s tireless efforts to champion economic reform, education, youth empowerment, and peace-building in Somalia.

Joining President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and Minister of Family and Human Rights Khadija Al Makhzoumi on this prestigious list, Dr. Osman stands among the very few leaders celebrated for their transformative impact on the nation. His vision for Somalia goes beyond policymaking; it’s a mission to empower every Somali to take part in building a peaceful, prosperous, and unified country.

Dr. Osman’s influence is not confined to Somalia’s borders. His leadership extends to the international stage, where he serves as the Regional Representative for the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE) in the Middle East, Eastern Africa, and Southern Africa. This dual role enables him to connect Somalia’s challenges with global solutions, bringing innovative ideas and resources back home to drive development and reform.

The honour bestowed by Five Magazine this year follows another milestone in Dr. Osman’s career. In January 2024, he was named one of Africa’s three most influential young leaders by the Paris-based Africa Intelligence, alongside Nigeria’s Tolu Obamuroh and Kenya’s Wanjiku Thiga. This accolade highlighted Dr. Osman’s ability to shape Somalia’s policies, enhance its international partnerships, and drive regional integration. His inclusion on these lists underscores a new narrative for Somalia—one of potential, progress, and hope.

At the heart of Dr. Osman’s contributions is a profound belief in the transformative power of education. In collaboration with UPEACE and Qatar Charity, he spearheaded the establishment of Somalia’s first-ever Presidential Doctoral Scholarship Program. This groundbreaking initiative, which currently supports 40 doctoral candidates and aims to expand to 100, is cultivating the country’s next generation of leaders and thinkers. It is not just an investment in individuals but a commitment to Somalia’s long-term prosperity.

Dr. Osman’s focus on education extends beyond academic programs. In May 2024, he sponsored the Somali Youth League (SYL) Cup, a national sports tournament held in Mogadishu’s Ma’aqul Stadium. This event celebrated the legacy of Somalia’s founding youth organization while providing young Somalis with a platform to showcase their talents and leadership potential. More than just a tournament, the SYL Cup was a unifying moment for the country, inspiring pride and hope among its youth.

This commitment to youth empowerment is a defining feature of Dr. Osman’s leadership. Through his work with the Resilient Africa Network and the Somali Response Innovation Lab, he has supported young innovators tackling challenges such as drought, displacement, and food insecurity. By nurturing creativity and resilience, Dr. Osman is helping Somalia’s youth become the drivers of its future.

Dr. Osman’s influence also reaches the global stage, where he advocates for peace and cooperation. In November 2024, he played a critical role in renewing the partnership between UPEACE and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD). This collaboration focuses on addressing the Horn of Africa’s most pressing challenges, from conflict stabilization to governance reforms and climate adaptation. It is a clear demonstration of Dr. Osman’s belief in the power of partnerships to create lasting solutions.

Further exemplifying his commitment to peace, Dr. Osman co-hosted a community dialogue with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva in November 2024. The event highlighted the role of displaced persons as agents of reconciliation and inclusion, showcasing innovative approaches to peacebuilding and sustainable development. These global engagements reflect Dr. Osman’s ability to bridge local and international perspectives, ensuring that Somalia’s voice is heard in critical discussions.

In May 2024, Dr. Osman traveled to Vietnam to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. The visit provided valuable insights into Vietnam’s journey from conflict to recovery, a transformation built on reconciliation, education, and strategic development. Drawing parallels between Vietnam’s experience and Somalia’s ongoing challenges, Dr. Osman emphasized the importance of resilience and unity in nation-building. His reflections on this visit offer a vision of what Somalia can achieve by embracing similar principles.

Dr. Osman’s leadership is not limited to education and diplomacy; he is also a staunch advocate for environmental sustainability. His support for initiatives like the Great Green Wall project demonstrates his commitment to combating desertification and promoting reforestation across Somalia and the Sahel region. By prioritizing climate resilience, Dr. Osman is ensuring that Somalia is not only prepared for the challenges of a changing world but is also contributing to global environmental efforts.

At just 38 years old, Dr. Osman’s accomplishments are remarkable. His inclusion in Five Magazine and Africa Intelligence reflects not just his personal achievements but also the potential of Somalia to emerge as a leader in the region. His work is reshaping the country’s narrative, proving that progress is possible even in the face of immense challenges.

As Somalia works toward its Centennial Vision 2060, which aims to transform the nation into a peaceful, stable, and prosperous society, Dr. Osman’s contributions serve as a guiding light. This long-term plan emphasizes governance reforms, justice, and inclusive development, and Dr. Osman’s initiatives align seamlessly with these goals. His leadership is a reminder that Somalia’s success depends on collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment.

Dr. Osman’s recognition for a second consecutive year is more than a personal milestone; it is a source of pride for the entire nation. It reflects a new chapter for Somalia, one defined by resilience, opportunity, and ambition. As the country continues its journey of transformation, leaders like Dr. Osman are showing the way forward, inspiring a generation to believe in the promise of a better tomorrow.

It’s January again in Somalia, a time to celebrate progress and to look ahead with optimism. Dr. Mohamed Osman Mohamoud embodies the spirit of this moment—a leader who has dedicated his life to building a Somalia that is not only strong but also compassionate, inclusive, and united. With his vision and determination, there is no limit to what Somalia can achieve.
