Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – May 30, 2025 – General Luciano Portolano, Commander of the Italian Military, arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday, May 29, 2025, for an official visit. The high-level engagement reflects the deepening partnership between Somalia and Italy in matters of defense, security, and regional stability
General Portolano was received upon arrival at Aden Adde International Airport by the Deputy Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), General Maadey Nurey Sheikh, along with senior military officials. The welcoming ceremony highlighted the strong diplomatic and military ties between the two nations, with both sides expressing optimism about future collaboration.
Following the arrival formalities, the Italian delegation held closed-door talks with Somali military leaders at the SNA headquarters. The discussions focused on enhancing training programs, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism efforts, particularly in the fight against extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab.
Speaking after the meeting, General Portolano emphasized Italy’s long-standing commitment to supporting Somalia’s security sector. The relationship between Somalia and Italy dates back decades, with Italy playing a pivotal role in Somalia’s post-independence era. In recent years, Italy has increased its military engagement, contributing to the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-Somalia) and providing critical support in the areas of counterinsurgency and maritime security.
Analysts suggest that General Portolano’s visit could pave the way for expanded Italian investment in Somalia’s defense infrastructure, including the modernization of military equipment and the establishment of joint training facilities.
The strengthening of Somalia-Italy military ties comes at a crucial time, as the Horn of Africa continues to grapple with security challenges, including fighting Khawaarij groups. Italy’s involvement is seen as part of a broader international effort to stabilize Somalia and prevent the resurgence of militant groups.
As General Portolano’s visit concludes, both nations are expected to announce new agreements aimed at further solidifying their defense partnership. Observers believe that such cooperation will not only enhance Somalia’s security apparatus but also contribute to broader regional stability.
The Somali government has expressed gratitude for Italy’s continued support, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expected to meet with Italian defense officials in the coming months to discuss additional collaboration.
