Djibouti, SONNA – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has issued a strong condemnation following recent drone strikes that targeted critical civilian infrastructure and areas in Port Sudan.
In a statement released today, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, expressed the organization’s “grave concern and unequivocal condemnation” of these acts of violence. He emphasized that such actions pose a serious threat to the lives of civilians and risk further aggravating the already precarious humanitarian and political situation in Sudan.
“These attacks on civilian infrastructure are unacceptable and must come to an immediate end,” stated Dr. Workneh. He highlighted the critical role Port Sudan plays, having “long served as a vital humanitarian and logistical lifeline for millions of Sudanese.” Any assault on this crucial hub, he added, “compounds human suffering and impedes the delivery of urgently needed assistance.”
The Executive Secretary reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Sudanese crisis. He urged all involved parties to cease hostilities without delay and to engage in inclusive, constructive dialogue. IGAD, the statement concluded, remains fully engaged with all stakeholders in support of efforts to protect civilians and preserve regional stability.
