Mogadishu, Somalia – June 6, 2024: The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Chinese embassy in Mogadishu have both extended their warmest congratulations to the Federal Republic of Somalia for its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term. Somalia’s election during the 78th session of the United Nations is particularly noteworthy as it is only the second time in 52 years that the country has secured this seat. Joining Somalia in this new term are Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, and Panama, who will collectively replace the outgoing non-permanent members Mozambique, Switzerland, Malta, Japan, and Ecuador.
