A former member of the militant group Al-Shabaab, also known as the Khawarij, has surrendered to the Somali government forces after spending five years with the group. Hassan Hussein Ibrahim, who was known by the nickname Gerdhuub among the Khawarij, gave himself up to the 60th Division of the government forces in the Bay and Lower Jubba regions.
In an interview with SONNA, the official news agency of Somalia, Hassan revealed the reasons behind his decision to defect from Al-Shabaab. He said that he faced many difficulties and hardships during his time with the group and that he did not benefit from anything. He also said that he suffered from the problems that Al-Shabaab caused to the people and that he wanted to leave them and join the government forces. He urged his former comrades who are still with Al-Shabaab to follow his example and surrender to the government.
The Somali government has been making great efforts in recent times to liberate the country from the war and to bring peace and stability to the country. The government has been encouraging defections from Al-Shabaab and offering amnesty and rehabilitation programs to those who renounce violence and extremism. The government hopes that more members of Al-Shabaab will abandon the group and join the peace process.
