MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, General Bashir Mohamed Jama, convened a high-level strategic meeting with the Representative and Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Somalia, Mr. El-Hameed Nuru. The talks, held in the capital on Thursday, focused on aligning national environmental policies with international humanitarian efforts to aggressively combat the escalating challenges of global climate change.
During the comprehensive discussions, both leaders prioritized the immediate need for robust climate change adaptation strategies. They addressed the critical intersection of environmental degradation and food security, recognizing that cyclical climate shocks directly threaten the stability and livelihoods of millions across the Horn of Africa. The dialogue extensively covered the severe operational impacts of these shifts, specifically analyzing the devastating patterns of recurring droughts, flash floods, and other climate-induced natural disasters that persistently drive internal displacement.
The engagement served to solidify the operational partnership between the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) and the WFP. Both parties formally reaffirmed their mutual commitment to executing joint initiatives aimed at protecting civilian lives and preserving the fragile ecological balance of the region. By coordinating their logistical resources, data, and technical expertise, the Ministry and the WFP intend to build sustainable, long-term resilience among Somalia’s most vulnerable communities, ensuring they are systematically equipped to withstand future environmental crises.
