Day Two of Voter Registration Sees Strong Turnout in Key Mogadishu Districts Ahead of June Local Elections

Mogadishu, (SONNA) – For the second consecutive day, voter registration is ongoing in the Mogadishu districts of Xamarweyne, Shibis, and Boondheere as part of preparations for the upcoming district council elections scheduled for June.

Hundreds of residents in these districts turned out in large numbers, forming long queues at registration centers to obtain their voter cards and participate in what marks a historic democratic moment for the city.

District commissioners from Xamarweyne, Shibis, and Boondheere welcomed the public’s enthusiastic response, urging more citizens to register and exercise their right to vote for leaders of their choice.

One elder from Shibis expressed his joy, saying, “After 56 years, it is a great honor for me to finally receive a voter registration card.”

So far, four districts in Mogadishu have launched voter registration, with Shangaani being the first to complete the process. This milestone marks the first time in over 60 years that Somali citizens will be able to elect local leaders through a formal electoral process — a moment widely embraced by the public as a step toward inclusive governance and political empowerment.
