Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Somalia National News Agency (SONNA), a beacon of journalism in the Horn of Africa, is celebrating its 60th anniversary today. Established in 1964, SONNA has been at the forefront of reporting in Somalia, providing an essential service to the nation and its Diaspora communities.

Over the past six decades, SONNA has witnessed and chronicled the ebb and flow of Somalia’s history. From the early days of independence, through times of turmoil, to the current era of rebuilding and growth, SONNA’s journalists have been on the ground, reporting with integrity and bravery.

“The journey has been long and challenging, but also incredibly rewarding,” said Current Director of SONNA Ismail Mukhtar reflecting on the agency’s history said, “SONNA played a crucial role in informing the public, supporting democracy and promoting a sense of national unity.” He added.

SONNA’s 60th anniversary is not just a celebration of its past but also a look to the future. With the advent of digital technology, SONNA has expanded its reach, offering news through various platforms including radio, television, and online portals. This digital transformation has enabled SONNA to connect with younger audience and Somali communities worldwide.

As Somalia continues to navigate through complex challenges, the role of SONNA remains crucial. The network stands as a testament to the resilience and perseverance of Somali journalism, committed to truth and the public’s right to information.

“In the years to come, we hope to continue being a pillar of reliable and impartial news in Somalia and beyond,” Daud Aweis, Minister of Information stated.

“Today, we celebrate not only our past achievements but also the exciting journey ahead,” the Minister added.
