Mogadishu(SONNA)-About 10 people were killed and 12 others injured after heavy rains and strong winds hit Islands, and beaches near Kismayo town in lower Jubba region southern Somalia, SONNA reported Saturday.

Jubaland State Minister for Fisheries, Ibrahim Abdi Hassan told SONNA that the two months long rains and latest winds had a negative impact on both fishermen and commercial boats in the region, noting that 17 boats are either destroyed or missing so far.

“We confirmed that 9 people mostly in  the fishery industry were killed and 12 others injured while 17 boats were either sunk and destroyed or missing so far. Some commercials boats suspended their voyage due to the fear of this bad weather in which were are experiencing now”, Mr. Hassan said.

This deadly incident comes days after Somalia’s Ministry of Humanitarian and Disaster Management Affairs issued warning against possible threat of such winds, rains and floods mainly at the Somali rivers and beaches and informed dwellers nearby to be very alert.
