Berlin, (SONNA) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met in Berlin with the Chancellor of Germany, H.E. Olaf Scholz, to discuss various issues concerning the cooperation between the two governments.
The two leaders extensively discussed their countries’ interests and the continuity of cooperation in areas such as climate, economic development, supporting the Somali government’s efforts in taking over security responsibilities post-ATMIS mission, and the training and equipping of the Somali Police Force to enhance its capabilities in ensuring the country’s safety, among other important matters related to Somalia’s state-building process.
During the meeting, Chancellor Scholz raised the topic of refugees and asylum seekers, noting that Germany is one of the major destinations for people fleeing conflict and living challenges from various parts of the world. He mentioned that thousands of Somalis are among those who have been granted asylum in Germany and are now contributing positively to the country’s development and social integration.
However, H.E. Scholz also noted that there are a very small number of Somali immigrants residing illegally in the country after committing crimes, thereby losing their asylum rights.
The President of Somalia said that people who forfeited their rights of asylum can voluntarily return to their country and that he appreciates Germany’s role in welcoming Somali asylum seekers and providing them with opportunities.
This meeting was part of an official visit by President Hassan Sheikh to Germany, made at the invitation of Chancellor Scholz.
The meeting between the two leaders concluded with mutual understanding, paving the way for continued cooperation between the two countries based on their long-standing friendly relations.
