Mogadishu(SONNA)-Al-Shabaab militants suffered heavy casualties, lost the control of larges swathes in Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle and Galgudud region in south-central Somalia during the military operations in the past five months.

National Intelligence and Security Agency said in report at yesterday’s Cabinet Ministers’ Meeting, chaired by President Hassan, showed that the terrorist militants suffered heavy loss, identifying that the group lost 2000 fighters during the ongoing operations so far.

Al-Shabaab militants lost 50 towns in three regions mainly Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle region under Hirshabelle State in Somalia.

The Group’s defeat resulted in great suspicion, division and started to surrender to Somali National Army officials at the frontline.

SNA forces with the Local forces’ aka Ma’awisley and International Partners jointly carried out the gallant operations which is still going on in the regions mentioned and it is expected for such operations to expand to southern parts in the county.

The joint forces are trying their best to contain Group’s ability to carrying out mass killings on civilian targets by using suicide car bomb attacks, and Improvised Explosive Devices in which they massacre innocent civilians like the latest one in Mahas district in Hiiraan region on January 4, 2023.
