Somalia’s Prime Minister Engages UNHCR to Transform Refugee Aid into Development Projects

Mogadishu, SONNA – In a pivotal meeting held on Wednesday, Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, welcomed the head of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Somalia, Charles Mballa, to discuss the pressing issues facing refugees and internally displaced persons within the nation.

The Prime Minister and Mr. Mballa engaged in in-depth discussions on how the current humanitarian aid efforts can be restructured into long-term development projects. This strategic shift aims to provide a sustainable solution to the challenges that lead to displacement, rather than merely addressing the immediate needs of those affected.

Highlighting the government’s priority areas, PM Hamza stressed the importance of aligning the agency’s activities with these concerns, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming rainy season. The effects of climate and seasonal changes pose additional risks to vulnerable populations, making preparedness a key focus of their collaborative efforts.

On his part, Charles Mballa assured the Prime Minister of UNHCR’s commitment to work closely with various Somali government agencies. This partnership is expected to ensure that the priority issues identified are addressed effectively, paving the way for a more stable and resilient Somalia.

The meeting underscores both parties’ dedication to transforming the landscape of refugee assistance from short-term relief to long-term, developmental aid, marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s path to recovery and progress.
