In a landmark financial agreement, the Minister of Finance of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Bihi Iman Ige, has successfully negotiated the forgiveness of Somalia’s debt amounting to $1.2 billion. The historic deal was signed in Paris, France, marking the culmination of extended negotiations with the Paris Club, a group of creditor nations.
Mr. Ige announced the breakthrough, stating, “We have reached a consensus and signed an agreement with ten countries within the Paris Club to absolve Somalia of its debts.” This significant move by the Paris Club goes beyond the initial commitments under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, paving the way for Somalia to engage in special agreements with each of the creditor nations.
The debt forgiveness is a substantial stride towards economic recovery for Somalia, allowing the nation to redirect resources towards development and growth. The international community has shown a vote of confidence in Somalia’s ongoing reforms and financial management.
The agreement is expected to bolster Somalia’s international standing and attract further investment, as the country continues to rebuild and progress towards a more prosperous future.
