Mogadishu, SONNA – The Somali Federal Government’s Council of Ministers held its weekly meeting in Mogadishu, chaired by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre. During the session, ministers reviewed and commended the progress of ongoing military operations against Khawarij militants across various regions of the country. Security reports presented to the cabinet highlighted significant achievements by Somali forces, including the liberation of strategic areas and substantial blows to terrorist networks.
The Council praised the bravery and sacrifices of the Somali National Army, regional forces, and local communities participating in counterterrorism efforts. Prime Minister Barre emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in these operations, calling for increased support to frontline troops through enhanced equipment, training, and logistical resources. The ministers also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation between security agencies and local populations in newly liberated areas to ensure lasting stability.
In addition to security matters, the cabinet approved a bilateral agreement between Somalia and Egypt that waives visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders. This agreement will allow citizens of both nations holding diplomatic passports to enter and exit each other’s countries without restrictions for up to 90 days. The move is seen as an important step in facilitating high-level exchanges and strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The meeting concluded with ministers reaffirming the government’s dual commitment to both security and diplomatic progress. Prime Minister Barre highlighted how these parallel efforts – military successes against extremists and strengthened international partnerships – are equally vital for Somalia’s continued stabilization and development. The Council resolved to maintain its support for security forces while pursuing additional diplomatic and economic cooperation opportunities with international partners.
